League play in itself is great, but
it severely limits the use of this facility by non-league players. The limited times I have played in leagues
(as a substitute player during cold weather months) league play occupied at least two courts, and I have
been told that during the warmer months when outdoor nighttime activity is more popular, one league
can occupy up to four courts. The Activity Guide lists two leagues scheduled to play Monday,Tuesday
and Thursday nights, and one league scheduled for Wednesday night. This leaves very few courts
available for casual play.

The US Tennis Court and Track Builders Assn (a source found on-line under TENNIS COURTS)
recommends 7200 sq ft needed to build one court, complete with necessary side and end areas. To
recover the eight courts the tennis public lost when Amador courts were converted to a parking lot (and
"replacing" courts were enclosed within campus fencing), would require 57,600 sq ft, which equates to
less than 1.4 acres. This is less than '1/2 of '1% of the 318 acres in the Bernal property. I am sure that
planners can find that amount of space to include this vitally needed ingredient into the newly acquired
land.

Tennis is an activity that is enjoyed by all ages. I have seen five and six year olds, under watchful
parents' eyes, swinging mightily at tennis balls. I have seen and played against a teen from the high
school practicing his skills. I am one of many retirees who still benefit from this healthful activity.
However, the majority of those I play with on weekends are in neither of these age groups, but are
working adults who live and pay taxes in Pleasanton.

The City Manager has been asked to conduct a study of court useage and availability. I am confident his
report will show that Pleasanton need more lighted courts. The Bernal property is apparently the only
area where they can be built. Let's not squander this golden opportunity.

Thank you.

4/18/2005
