Tree Report, Vineyard Townhome Condominiums
Pleasanton, CA
September 15, 2005

HortScience, Inc.
Page 12

3. Trees #24-27. 32-36, 38, 47 and 57 are off-site and private trees. We recommend
obtaining the permission of the property owners prior to pruning. Prune off-site trees to
provide clearance for construction, if required. Valley oak #57 has a low lateral branch
that extends into the site. The consulting arborist should meet with the Tree Contractor
and property owner to discuss the pruning requirements for the tree prior to pruning.
Prune on-site trees to provide clearance for demolition and construction, and to clean
the crown to 1" diameter branches. All pruning shall be done by a State of California
Licensed Tree Contractor (C61/D49). All pruning shall be done by Certified Arborist or
Certified Tree Worker in accordance with the Best Management Practices for Pruning
(International Society of Arboriculture, 2002) and adhere to the most recent editions of
the American National Standard for Tree Care Operations (Z133.1) and Pruning (A300).

4. Tree(s) to be removed that have branches extending into the canopy of tree(s) to
remain shall be removed by a Certified Arborist or Certified Tree Worker and not by the
demolition contractor. The Certified Arborist or Certified Tree Worker shall remove the
trees in a manner that causes no damage to the tree(s) and understory to remain.

5. Apply and maintain a 4-6" -deep layer of wood chip mulch (gorilla hair mulch is not
acceptable) within the TREE PROTECTION ZONE. Keep mulch 2'-3' from the trunk.

Recommendations for tree protection during construction
1. The Consulting Arborist may recommend the trunks on selected trees be protected with
hay bales or plywood during construction. The Consulting Arborist may recommend that
the demolition of some items be done by hand to avoid damaging trees.

2. All grading and demolition within the dripline of trees shall be done using the smallest
equipment possible. The Consulting Arborist will identify where hand grading will be
required. The equipment shall operate perpendicular to the tree and operate from
outside the TREE PROTECTION ZONE. Motorized compaction equipment shall not be used
within the TREE PROTECTION ZONE.

3. Prior to excavation for the grading or construction trees must be root pruned outside the
TREE PROTECTION ZONE by cutting all roots cleanly to the depth of construction. Roots
will be exposed by either: pulling soil away from the tree with a small back hoe; digging
by hand; using an air spade; or water evacuation. The Consulting Arborist should
monitor the excavation and root pruning. Roots shall be pruned at undamaged tissue
and perpendicular to the root, with a saw or other approved root pruning equipment.
The Consulting Arborist will identify in the field where root pruning is to occur, if required.

.

Trees #24 and 47-both offsite trees have poor suitability for preservation.
The root pruning impacts may be severe and beyond the tolerances of the
trees.
Trees #21,24-27,32-36,38 and 57-the root pruning impacts are expected
to be within the tolerable limits of the trees.

.

4. Supplemental irrigation shall be applied as determined by the Consulting Arborist.

5. If injury should occur to any tree during construction, it should be evaluated as soon as
possible by the Consulting Arborist so that appropriate treatments can be applied.

6. No excess soil, chemicals. debris, equipment or other materiais shall be dumped or
stored within the TREE PROTECTION ZONE.
