Draft Environmental Impact Report
Bernal Property Phase II Specific Plan

presence or potential for populations of special-status taxa; and identification of existing
trees on the property that may be considered "heritage trees" according to City of
Pleasanton criteria, The surveys also established a preliminary understanding of the extent
of jurisdictional wetlands and "other waters of the U,S,"ll The data collected during these
previous surveys for common plant and wildlife species and plant communities potentially
present on the site remain applicable,

This review focuses on changes in conditions since the earlier biological investigations, The
earlier data has been updated to reflect (l) changes in the status of protected plant and
animal species and (2) the potential for additional wildlife habitat to have been created on
the property, The field visit conducted by the EI R biologist (October 20, 2005) focused on
wildlife issues that may have changed since the previously-conducted field work. In the 2005
site visit, special attention was given to areas that may provide habitat for sensitive
herpetofauna, such as the California tiger salamander ("CTS," Ambystoma tigrinum
cafi[orniense) and the California red-legged frog ("CRLF," Rana aurora draytonii),

b. Existing Conditions

Figure 13 shows key biological resources of the Bernal Property Phase 2 Specific Plan site,
Appendix D presents background information on biological resources,

(1) Vegetation and Habitats

Plant Communities

Figure Dl (Appendix D) is a map from the 1997/2000 EIR showing vegetation and habitat
on the Bernal Property as it existed prior to the Phase I development:

. Arable Land and Non-native Grassland . Oak Savannah . Stock Pond

. Willow Stand and Thicket
. Ornamental Landscaping

. Riparian Forest
. Freshwater Marsh

. Heritage Trees
. Seasonal Wetlands

The principal habitat type was cultivated animal feed crops (Western and Central Areas) and
non-native grassland (Eastern Area), The earlier EIR also identified several trees of signifi-
cant size in the annual grassland on the fringes of the agricultural fields, Where develop-
ment has not already taken place, these communities are still present as mapped earlier,

Water-Related Habitats

Figure D2 (Appendix D) shows wetlands and other waters identified on the Bernal Property
in the 1997/2000 EIR, These included the well-developed riparian woodland vegetation
along the Arroyo de la Laguna in the Western Area and freshwater marshes along the
unnamed tributary stream in the Eastern Area (line B-2-1 in Appendix D, Figure D2),

12 These earlier studies are identified and described in the 1997/2000 EIR on the Bernal Property Phase I
Specific Plan (see PP, 275-281),
13 All Pleasanton Heritage trees are by definition 55" or greater.

56
