Preliminary Tree Report, 3459 Foothill Rd., Pleasanton
April 2, 2004

HortScience, Inc.
Page 2

Description of Trees
One hundred and fifty-six (156) trees were evaluated. Descriptions of each tree are found in
the Tree Survey; locations are plotted on the Tree Survey Map (see Attachments). A
summary is provided in Table 1.

There were 19 species representing 16 taxa at the site (Table 1). The most frequently
occurring species was valley oak (39% of the population), followed by coast live oak (12% of
the population).

The vegetation at the site consisted of three distinct groups. Planted exotic species were
growing around the residences, outbuildings and the driveway. Remnant walnut orchards
were present along Old Foothill Road, and indigenous species were spread across the
remainder of the site. Native tree species had been planted along portions of Old Foothill Rd.
as well as developing naturally in other areas. Two-thirds (104 of 156) of the trees were
indigenous and one-third were planted exotics.

Tree size ranged from 6" to 79" in trunk diameter with the majority of trees in the 24" diameter
range. The City of Pleasanton defines a tree with a diameter of 18" or greater, or a height of
35' or greater, as Heritage. Seventy-two of the trees surveyed met these criteria and are
identified in the Tree Survey.

Approximately half of the trees were in good condition (55%), with 25% rated in fair condition
and 19% in poor condition. Of the trees in good condition, indigenous trees constituted the
majority (75 of 81). Several of the large, mature oaks had experienced extensive crown
failures resulting in large cavities and decay.

Table 1: Condition ratings and frequency of occurrence of trees,
Common Name Scientific Name Condition RatinQ No,of
Poor Fair Good Trees
(1-2) (3) (4-5)
Bailey acacia Acacia baileyana 4 3 7
Big leaf maple Acer macrophyllum 1 1
Ca. buckeye Aesculus califomica 1 4 9 14
Arizona cypress Cupressus arizonica 'G/auca' 4 4
Blue gum Eucalyptus globulus 1 3 4 8
Ca. black walnut Jug/ans hindsii 1 9 1 11
English walnut Juglans regia 4 8 12
Mulberry Morus alba 1 1
Olive Olea europa 1 1 2
Canary Island pine Pinus canariensis 1 1
Ca. sycamore Platanus racemosa 2 1 3
Fremont Cottonwood Populus fremontii 4 4
Purple leaf plum Prunus cerasifera 'Atropurpurea' 1 1
Plum Prunus spp. 2 2
Coast live oak Quercus agrifolia 1 2 15 18
Black oak Quercus kelloggii 1 1
Valley oak Quercus lobata 7 5 48 61
Black locust Robinia pseudoacacia 1 1 2
California pepper Schinus molle 2 1 3
Total 30 39 86 156
19% 25% 55% 100%
