Project No. JB-569
20 June 2006
Revised 78 October 2006
Page 11
Table 3
FOUNDATION DESIGN CRITERIA FOR
CAST-IN PLACE PIERS
Item Criteria
Diameter Minimum 12 in.
Spacing Minimum 3 pier diameters, center to
center
Depth' Minimum of 10 feet, or 3 feet into
native soil, whichever is deeper, as
determined by our representative during
drilling. Maximum spacing to be
determined by the Project Structural
Engineer. Pier depths are expected to
be 10 to 15 feet in depth.
Allowable Friction Value2 Allowable friction value of 500 psf,
which may be increased by 1 /3 for wind
and seismic loads
Lateral Loads See Section 6.3 "Lateral Load Design
Criteria
1 . Depth of foundation embedment is measured from the lowest adjacent soil grade to the bottom of the pier hole.
2. The recommendations above may be increased by one-third for wind and seismic loads.
- Care should be taken to avoid "mushrooming" at the bottoms of the grade beam
or at the tops of piers when placing concrete. We recommend that concrete be
placed in all pier holes within 24 to 48 hours after the time of acceptance by our
firm's representative.
We recommend our representative observe pier drilling to confirm the competence
of the materials in the pier holes. Depending on the time of year of drilling and
the pier location, groundwater may be encountered in some pier holes. In such
cases, the pier holes should be cleaned of loose slough and either pumped dry just
prior to pouring concrete or tremied with concrete to "float" the water above the
concrete with the tremie hose maintaining a minimum 5-foot head of concrete at
all times during hose removal.
~ orbmacher Engineering.
