As a
Christian, anytime I see a house of God expanding, I feel good. However, as a neighbor of Trinity
Lutheran, I must express my objections to their plans for an expansion. The reasons for my objection
are as follows:
1) Traffic at Hopyard & Golden is already a nightmare. On youth nights Golden Road is often blocked
by double parked teens. Last spring during the rains, when visibility was poor, inexperienced teenage
drivers routinely made abrupt u-turns on Golden, and would bolt across the street in front of on-coming
cars. They do these things anyway, but it was particularly dangerous at that time. They also contribute
to the 'hot roddinb on Golden. I had one girl change lanes into me on Hopyard; I stopped and asked her
if she realized how close she came to hitting me, her excuse was that she 'HAD to get over'. I asked her
why she didn't just pull in behind me since there were no cars behind me, and she said 'because I'm
late' ?!?!
On Sunday mornings and on weekdays when the moms/women's groups meet the traffic isn't much
better with the adults in charge. Many of the same situations occur: abrupt u-turns, bolting out to cross
the street without looking, pulling out of the parking lot without looking, large groups standing around
in the middle of the street talking, and, of course, the infamous 'cell phone distracted driver' who's
coming right down the center of the street and, either you have to pull to the curb, or, if you can't, they
do a last minute swerve to avoid hitting you, and one even yelled at ME when they had to move over!
2) Parking is already a problem when both the church and the swim clubs meet at the same time. I live,
almost at the, end of Golden, and there are times when I can't park in front of my own house, and have
had my driveway partially blocked when an over sized SUV parked in an undersized space between cny
driveway and that of my neighbor. I called PPD one Sunday when someone parked their vehicle across
the, (only), cross walk across Golden at Hopyard where three small children with bikes were having a
hard time navigating around the offending vehicle to cross the street.
These folks are not good neighbors. If these things were happening in their own neighborhoods, I'm
sure that they would object, strenuously. Granted, part of the problem is the swim club, but most of it
rests with the congregation of Trinity Lutheran. Why make it even worse by expanding the church. Will
there finally be enough off street parking for all? And if there is, will the church, (as they, no doubt
hope), grow out of that space as well and take over the street again? When they do, that corner will
become even more difficult to navigate than it already is.
I urge you to extend my objections to the Planning Department and to deny this request to expand
Trinity Lutheran.
Sincerely,
Lora Condon
9/6/2006
