20.20.027
Photovoltaic Systems Voltage. The
direct current (dc) voltage of any
photovoltaic source or photovoltaic
output circuit. For bipolar or multi-
wire installations, the Photovoltaic
systems voltage is the highest volt-
age between any two do conductors.
Solar Cell. The basic photovoltaic
device that generates electricity when
exposed to light.
Solar Photovoltaic System. The
total components and subsystems
that, in combination, convert solar
energy into electrical energy suitable
for connection to a utilization load.
Stand-Alone System. A solar photo-
voltaic system that supplies power
independently of an electrical pro-
duction and distribution network.
690.3 Other Articles.
Wherever the requirements of other
articles of this Code and Article 690
differ, the requirements of Article
690 shall apply and, if the system is
operated in parallel with a primary
source(s) of electricity, the require-
ments in 705.14, 705.16, 705.32, and
705.43 shall apply.
690.4 Installation.
(A) Solar Photovoltaic System. A
solar photovoltaic system shall be
permitted to supply a building or
other structure in addition to any ser-
vice(s) of another electricity supply
system(s).
(B) Conductors of Different Systems.
Photovoltaic source circuits and pho-
tovoltaic output circuits shall not be
contained in the same raceway, cable
tray, cable, outlet box, junction box,
or similar fitting as feeders or branch
circuits of other systems, unless the
conductors of the different systems
are separated by a partition or are
connected together.
(C) Module Connection Arrange-
ment. The connections to a module
or panel shall be arranged so that
removal of a module or panel from a
photovoltaic source circuit does not
interrupt a grounded conductor to
another photovoltaic source circuit.
Sets of modules interconnected as
systems rated at 50 volts or less,
with or without blocking diodes, and
having a single over current device
shall be considered as asingle-source
circuit. Supplementary over current
devices used for the exclusive pro-
tection of the photovoltaic modules
are not considered as over current
devices for the purpose of this sec-
tion.
(D) Equipment. Inverters or motor
generators shall be identified for use
in solar photovoltaic systems.
690.5 Ground-Fault Protection.
Roof-mounted do photovoltaic arrays
located on dwellings shall be provid-
ed with do ground-fault protection to
reduce fire hazards.
(A) Ground-Fault Detection and
(Pleasanton April 2003) 710-16
