20.08.049
Standard for the
Installation of Sprinkler Systems
up to Fifteen (15) Units or
Twelve Thousand Square Feet
(12,000) Maximum
CITY OF PLEASANTON
SPRINKLER STANDARD 9-3 (1999)
NOTICE: An asterisk (*) following the
number or letter designating a paza-
graph indicates explanatory material on
that pazagraph in Appendix A.
Information on referenced publications
can be found in Chapter 5.
Sec. 9.103 Performance Criteria
This standazd for aloes-cost residen-
tial automatic sprinkler system is
designed for the following perfor-
mance criteria:
1. To prevent flashovers.
2. To save lives immediately adja-
cent to the fire and protect internal
exposures.
3. To confine the fire to room of
origin.
4. To work in conjunction with the
Livermore Pleasanton Fire and
Building Codes as adopted.
5. To reduce property damage.
CHAPTER 1. Scope, Purpose, and
Limitations
Sec. 9.101 Purpose
This standazd describes a low-cost
automatic sprinkler system which
will contribute to the reduction of
loss of life and property damage by
fire currently experienced in resi-
dences.
Sec. 9.102 Scope
This standazd describes the require-
ments for the mechanical and perfor-
mance properties of the sprinkler
itself. It also describes the require-
ments for the installation of the
complete sprinkler system for one to
fifteen family dwelling units (not
exceeding 12,000 sf in any one
building) and UBC Standazd 9-1 for
all other occupancies.
Sec. 9.104 Limitations
This standazd is intended to describe
a suppression system which can
maintain a tenable environment for a
period of ten (10) minutes following
the operation of the sprinkler.
Persons in direct proximity to the
fire may not benefit from the sup-
pression portion of the sprinkler
system, nor will persons suffering
ancillary injuries or those that aze
nonambulatory or in the state of
panic reaction to the fire emergency.
This standard permits omission of
sprinklers in certain areas in which
fires are statistically unlikely to
originate and in azeas of low com-
bustible loading. Fires starting in the
above type of area will be uncon-
trolled except eventually by an out-
side agency.
'700_ 1 (Pleasanton April 2000)
