Rita sign was also reduced in size. He believed approval of the variance would be precedent
setting.

Ms. Mohr believed signage was for advertising and directions. She asked what kind of
signage would be on the Safeway building.

Mr. Swift indicated there would be a large Safeway sign facing Valley Avenue and on
the Santa Rita side there would be small shops with their own signs.

Ms. Mohr felt Safeway was a landmark for her, but she acknowledged that there are new
residents in Pleasanton every year, so signage for people not familiar with the area has value.
She described traffic patterns traveling east on Valley Avenue and felt a modified sign would
be acceptable on Valley Avenue to help people see the entrance to the shopping center. She felt
the sign should be moved closer to the property line to help it be more visible. Regarding the
Santa Rita sign, she did not object because the proposed sign would be the same square footage
as the old one. She supported a modified sign on Valley to be referred to staff regarding the
location.

It was moved by Ms. Mohr, seconded by Ms. Michelotti, to approve the variance
to allow two signs, to modify the sign on Valley Avenue and refer the design to staff to
determine the appropriate location.

Mr. Tarver agreed there are too many signs and he has opposed pylon signs for a long
time. He could not make the findings to allow this variance. He felt people know where this
Safeway store is and it is easy to find. He felt there were many commercial centers with gas
stations on the corner and felt this would be setting a precedent for no reason. He felt allowing
multiple signs would provide an advantage to Safeway and other centers will apply for additional
signage.

A substitute motion was made by Mr. Tarver, seconded by Ms. Dennis, to deny the
appeal.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Dennis, Michelotti, Pico, and Mayor Tarver
NOES: Councilmember Mohr
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

09/17/96
-15-
