237

by routing commuting traffic into alternatives such as Valley
Avenue or Stoneridge Drive. He mentioned that extending Del Valle
Parkway is not the solution to the traffic on Division Street and
St. Marys Street because a study showed that approximately 75% of
southbound traffic on Division and St. Marys Streets make a right
turn either on Peters Avenue or on Main Street; diverting them to
Del Valle Parkway would mean a longer route. He added that a
left-hand turn on St. Marys Street from Del Valle Parkway does not
solve the problem either, as most of the 9,000 cars that travel
southbound on Hopyard Road go on to Division Street and St. Marys
Street. If their destination were north of Del Valle Parkway on
Santa Rita Road, it would very unlikely that they would be
travelling south on Division and St. Marys Streets. He then
suggested that for the Alameda County Fair, a sign could be
installed on 1-580 west of the 1-680 Interchange indicating that
those headed for the Fair could take 1-680 south and exit at
Bernal Avenue rather than continue down 1-580 and exit on Hopyard
Road through Division and St. Marys Streets.

Mr. Tarver remarked that he understood there was a consensus
on allowing a left turn on Del Valle Parkway.

Mr. Mercer commented that the idea about the sign for the
Fair is a good one and could be put up permanently and said he
would follow that up with the Fair Board.

Mr. Brandes suggested that a sign could also be put on
southbound Hopyard Road to turn right on Valley Avenue to get to
the Fairgrounds.

Mr. van Gelder replied that it could be done.

Mr. Jon Scudder, 826 Division Street, presented the property
owners concerns for street safety, quality of life, and human
equality. He stated that the residents of St. Marys Street and
Division Street have had more downtown traffic than the rest of
Pleasanton. He added that there should be equal respect of peace,
health and safety and that one sector's interests should not be
protected at the expense of another. He mentioned that the short
and long term plans are equitable, inexpensive, reversible and
effective solutions that should be adopted.

Ms. Ruby Greer, 4774 Del Valle Parkway, stated that the
extension of Del Valle Parkway may not be the solution to the
traffic problem and that more time is needed to see its effects.

Mr. Mercer thanked all the residents who helped put the
proposal together.

Mr. Brandes pointed ou~ that there is no perfect solution for
the traffic problems. Re-evaluation would have to be done from
time to time.

-19-

8-15-89
