In the case of the Sarich property, many of the
preserved trees are in areas where development activities are not planned. Only
the trees in proximity to grading or construction were appraised. Forty-three (43)
trees were identified as being in proximity to development activities.
In appraising the trees, I employed the standard methods found in Guide for
Plant Appraisal, 8th edition (published in 1992 by the International Society of
Arboriculture, Savoy IL). In addition, I referred to Species Classification and
Group Assignment (1993), a publication of the Western Chapter of the
International Society of Arboricultu,~e. These two documents outline the methods
employed in tree appraisal.
The value of landscape trees is based upon four factors: size, species, condition
and location. Size is measured as trunk diameter, normally 54" above grade.
Where trees were cut off at ground level, I measured the diameter at this point
and then estimated the trunk diameter at 54" above grade.
The species factor considers the adaptability and appropriateness of the plant in
the East Bay area. The Species Classification and Group Assignment lists
recommended species ratings and evaluations. Condition reflects the health and
structural integrity of the individual. The location factor considers the site,
placement and contribution of the tree in its surrounding landscape.
The total of the appraised values of the 42 trees recommended for preservation
was $173,850 (see Table 3).
Table 3: Trees recommended for preservation, in proximity to
development, on the Sarich Property and their appraised values
Tree No. Species Trunk diameter Appraised
{inches) value _
1 Silver dollar gum 17 $2,750
3 Silver dollar gum 14,13 $3,450
6 Valley oak 21 $5,250
7 ~ Blue oak 24,16 $7,500
13 Blue oak 31 $8,450
14 Blue oak 27 $8,450
19 Blue oak 26 $7,900
20 Blue oak 15 $2,200
21 Blue oak 22 $5,750
79 Blue oak 23 $4,850
80 Blue oak 13 $1,700
81 Blue oak 11,9,9 $2,600
82 Blue oak 23,17 $7,350
83 Blue oak 17 $3,550
84 Blue oak 24 $5,250
89 Blue oak ~ 30 $10,400
96 Blue oak 12 $1,950
101 Blue oak 14 $1,950
102 Blue oak 18 $3,050
103 Blue oak 32 $11,550
(continued on next page)
J
