BI-ANNUAL AUTOMATED METER READING RETROFIT – ADDITIONAL FUNDING
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project provides additional funding to expand the City’s
automatic reading equipment program to approximately 5,000 water customers. The project
involves the installation of equipment to the top of water meters that transmits a radio signal
that can be read by equipment mounted on a passing vehicle. As such, it eliminates the
need for manual meter reading. While that project has been planned on a phase-in basis,
additional funding is recommended to take advantage of cost savings and improved data
collection.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:
Staff has determined that its existing automated meter reading
equipment, installed initially in 2006 to approximately 500 water customers, is performing
satisfactorily and that expansion of the program is warranted to improve overall meter
reading efficiency. Moving forward with the program at this time avoids anticipated
equipment increases.
PROJECT COST ESTIMATE
ItemCostFundingSource
Design, Retrofit Equipment & $500,000Water Replacement Funds $200,000
Installation
Bi-Annual Automated Meter $50,000
Reading Retrofit (CIP 081008)
Bi-Annual Automated Meter $50,000
Reading Retrofit (CIP 061000)
Annual Replacement of Water $200,000
Meters (CIP 071040)
TOTAL$500,000
CIP #:CATEGORY: RECOMMENDATION:
081008 Water Fund in 2008-2009
êê
