Steve Otto
From: Christine Steiner
Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 9:22 AM
To: Steve Otto
Subject: Senior Housing Proposal
Dear Steve,
I will be unable to attend the Pleasanton planning Commission tonight. However, I do want the commission to
know how I feel about the Pondorosa Homes application for the senior housing on the Bush property.
I have lived in Pleasanton for over 40 years and been involved in housing issues for over 35 years in Pleasanton
and Alameda County. I currently serve as a commissioner on the Alameda County Housing Authority and the
Commission on Aging.
I was a strong supporter of the original plan to build on the Bush property. When the school district took an
option on part of the property it was always the underlying assumption that In the event that the school district
did not exercise their option to build the developer -Ponderosa Homes, would construct senior housing on it.
One of the reasons for doing was that was that senior housing generates less traffic.
Another major reason was the serious need for the development of "For Sale" senior housing that would allow
residents in our community and surrounding areas as well as family members wishing to relocate here a place to
live. While we have provided affordable housing and some market rate units for seniors, we have failed to
provide for those who want to remain in the community and downsize. This type of development would allow
many residents to relocate without losing their Prop 13 tax base and will provide a safe and well maintained
project for seniors. Currently residents have had to relocate to Contra Costa County to find similar facilities.
Also, many people are not ready to relocate to the full service facility that will be provided on the Staples Ranch
property.
I urge the Pleasanton Planning Commission to support this development which will provide a badly needed
resource for our aging population.
Christine Steiner
596 Hamilton Way
Pleasanton, CA 94566
The I'm Talkaton.
