Since the early 1960's Pleasanton has been attracting families
with commuting workers. It can be speculated that the once
moderate transportation costs helped induce these families to
move to Pleasanton and other suburbs along with the originally
modest cost of homes in these areas. Times have changed.
Transportation costs have increased dramatically since the late
1960's. The price of gasoline, for example, has increased over
300% since 1967 while the Consumer Price Index (CPI), reflecting
the general increase in prices for all goods and services, has
also increased at the same rate. The price of a new single
family home has also tripled. Table 6 indicates the work places
of Pleasanton residents.

TABLE 6
PLACE OF WORK, PLEASANTON RESIDENTS:

Amador-Livermore Valley

(Pleasanton)

Oakland

Hayward-San Leandro

San Francisco

San Jose

Fremont

Concord

Other

1973

(Percent)

34.4

(8.5)
26.3'
14.51 -
5.

5.~

1973, 1975

1975
Principal Secondary
Wage Wage
Earner Earner
(Percent) (Percent)

29.1 58.2

43.5 25.1

9.3 6.3

18.1 10.3

Totals 100.0%

Sources:
1973 BART Extension Study
1975 Special Census, Pleasanton

100.0% 99.9%

-62-
