Persons per household varies by the type of residence as shown in
Table 8. The largest household size is unsurprisingly among single-
family units, although size in this category has decreased over the
past four years. Some reasons for this downward trend may be
a) today's married couples have children later in life; b) there has
been a decline in the overall birth rate; and c) couples and even
single individuals are residing in larger homes solely for investment
purposes. Household size has increased for larger multi-family
complexes with five or more units and mobile homes. Total persons
per household for all units is expected to decrease in the future
as exemplified by the projected data for Alameda County.

TABLE 8

PERSONS PER HOUSEHOLD, PLEASANTON:
1975 and 1979

1975 1979

Single-family 3.68 3.24
2-4 Unit Multiple 2.12 2.12
5+ Unit Multiple 1.90 1.94
Mobile Homes 1.11 1.81

Sources:
California Department of Finance
Pleasanton 1979 Housing Survey & Building Data

1970 1975 1978 1980

2.84 2.63 2.59 2.53
Sources:

Comparative Data: Alameda County
(Persons per household for all types of units)
Pro~ections

1990 2000

2.32 2.22

(ABAG)

Alameda County Planning Department
Association of Bay Area Governments
1980 U.
