18

• Cc: Clear Lake clay, 0 to 3 percent slopes, MLRA 14 – The Clear Lake series
consists of very deep clayey soils that are well to imperfectly drained. These soils are
formed by fine-textured alluvium from sedimentary rock. This soil is slowly permeable,
and runoff is very slow, while drainage is moderately good. Root penetration is very
deep, and the available water holding capacity is very high. Its stratified layers consist
of the following (colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated).
0 to 36 inches – dark-gray clay; strong prismatic structure that breaks to moderate
blocky structure; very hard when dry, very firm when moist; very plastic and stick when
wet; slightly acid in upper part, moderately alkaline in lower part.
36 to 48 inches – dark-gray clay; many seams of gypsum and modules of lime; weak
prismatic structure that breaks to moderate blocky; very hard when dry, firm when
moist, very plastic and sticky when wet; moderately alkaline.
48 to 65 inches – dark grayish-brown and light olive-brown silty clay; contains whitish
lime modules; moderate blocky structure; very hard when dry, friable when moist,
plastic and sticky when wet; moderately alkaline.
• LuD: Los Osos and Millsholm soils, 7 to 30 percent slopes – The Los Osos and
Millsholm soil series is an undifferentiated group consisting of both soil types in
proportions that vary from place to place. Permeability of these soils is moderate to
moderately slow, while runoff is slow to medium and the water holding capacity is low
to moderate. Root penetration is moderately deep, and the erosion hazard is moderate.
Its stratified layers consist of the following (colors are for dry soil unless otherwise
stated).
Los Osos Series
0 to 8 inches – grayish-brown light silty clay loam; massive; hard when dry, friable
when moist, sticky and plastic when wet; medium acid.
8 to 30 inches – dark grayish-brown heavy silty clay loam; moderate blocky structure;
hard when dry, friable when moist, sticky and plastic when wet; slightly acid.
30+ inches – pale-olive shale
Millsholm Series
0 to 17 inches – olive silt loam; massive; very hard when dry, friable when moist,
slightly sticky and slightly plastic when wet; medium acid.
