City of Pleasanton—Merritt Property Project
Consistency Checklist 15183 Consistency Checklist

60
These features are all incised due to the highly erosive soils. There was little to
no vegetation within the ordinary high water mark (OHWM). Dominant
vegetation found along the banks of the features include wild oat (Avena
occidentalis), rattail sixweek grass (Festuca myuros), Himalayan blackberry
(Rubus armeniacus), California buckeye (Aesculus californica), valley oak
(Quercus lobata), coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), and Fremont’s
cottonwood (Populus fremontii).
Intermittent Drainage
There is one intermittent drainage feature located in the northwest portion of
the project site. Approximately 255 feet of intermittent feature enters the
project site and then flows north, adjacent to Foothill Road, out of the site
boundary. The feature had a thick overstory of valley oak, coast live oak,
and Fremont’s cottonwood, with an understory consisting of Himalayan
blackberry, California buckeye, and poison oak (Toxicodendron
diversilobum).
Non-native Annual Grassland
A large portion of the project site is dominated by non-native annual
grassland habitat. Much of this vegetative cover was present in the
abandoned English walnut orchard (Juglans regia) portion of the site. Since
abandonment, approximately half of the trees have died, leaving large,
open areas in between the remaining trees. Dominant vegetation observed
within this habitat type includes wild oat, rattail sixweek grass, black mustard
(Brassica nigra), Italian thistle (Carduus pycnocephalus), and yellow starthistle
(Centaurea solstitialis). Annual grassland habitat located on the project site is
highly disturbed and is disked regularly.
Oak Woodland
Within the project site, a narrow band of oak woodland habitat occurs east
of Foothill Road and along a portion of the southern boundary. The
woodland habitat continues west, beyond the site boundary, up through the
Pleasanton Ridge. This habitat type is dominated with an overstory of valley
oak, coast live oak, and Fremont’s cottonwood, with an understory that
consisted of California buckeye, and English ivy (Hedera helix).
Common Wildlife Species
Common wildlife species were observed in the developed and annual
grassland portions of the site. A comprehensive list of common wildlife
species occurring within and/or adjacent to the site is referenced in
Attachment 2, Table 2 of the BRA (Appendix C).
