Application :: Page 7 of 18
Strategies:
Pleasanton Police Department will use a multi-faceted approach in implementing the grant
funds. Most of these efforts will be traffic enforcement related, focusing on specific traffic
violations which are the leading causes of injury collisions within Pleasanton. Grant funds will
cover overtime used to assign officers to directed enforcement opportunities focusing on the
grant goals to reduce collisions. Distracted driving, bicycle and pedestrian enforcement
operations are ways the grant will be implemented within the city. Additionally, PPD will use
grant funds to send officers to needed POST certified training programs such as SFST's, A-Ride,
and DRE. These essential training courses are needed for officer development and increasing
the confidence in officers when conducting proactive DUI enforcement operations. During this
current nationwide shortage of police officers, PPD had several collaborative operations with
neighboring agencies to conducted DUI enforcement operations. New PAS technologies will be
employed along with the enforcement efforts to bolster case strength while increasing successful
prosecution of impaired drivers. These operations were made possible by OTS grant funds and
will assist with future similar operations. PPD will communicate with the community via social
media and inform them about the grant and the goal of reducing factors that are contributing
towards collisions. Portable lighted sign boards along with PPD's website will be employed to
further the traffic safety message in the community. Bringing attention to specific traffic-related
issues will make the community aware of them and will assist in reducing the number of
collisions within the city.
Agency Qualifications:
The Pleasanton Police Department has been the recipient of OTS grants in the past, have
personnel who are familiar with the implementation of the grant, and are training other officers to
meet goals of internal succession planning. PPD has continued to hire new officers over the last
several years, but like other agencies around the area, low staffing levels have impacted our
directed special enforcement objectives. The Pleasanton Police Department has selected areas
of enforcement that are achievable for our department and our staffing levels. PPD has the
support of the Pleasanton City Council and City Manager in receiving OTS grant funds. We hope
to continue with our educational goals with traffic enforcement by allowing our officers to attend
traffic and DUI related, POST certified, training courses. We hope to include the opportunity to
host the DUI Checkpoint Management course as well as PAS calibration and Child Seat Safety
courses for our staff and other agencies.
Community Collaboration and Engagement
Provide a description of the community collaboration and engagement activities that will be conducted by your
department and addresses traffic safety. Community collaboration and engagement allows for the appropriate
department personnel to engage in conversations to both share information and receive input from the community
members regarding traffic safety.
