Major water courses include the
Arroyo del Valle and Arroyo de la Laguna. The earliest European presence in the vicinity of Pleasanton occurred in
1797. In the early 19th century, the Mexican government granted most of the vicinity of Pleasanton, including the
future town site, to members of the Bernal family; the area was inhabited primarily by cattle ranch workers, seasonal
hunters, and trappers. With American annexation of California and the Gold Rush in the late 1840s, the Bernal family
established permanent homes on their rancho, both to capitalize on the proximity to travel routes and to protect their
land claims. The initial settlers constructed adobe homes along the path of the Arroyo del Valle. (See Continuation
Sheet.)

B11.
