The goals and strategies that the plan recommends the City address to build upon the
current offerings were:
1. Enhance arts and cultural programming available to Pleasanton's residents, workers and
visitors.
2. Celebrate cultural diversity and enhance connections among disparate populations in
Pleasanton, including diverse racial/ethnic groups, national origin/heritage and
age/generation.
This project helps address those needs. The Ed Kinney Series brings in high quality,
knowledgeable performers from around the country who portray a variety of historical
characters. We are deliberate in choosing characters to introduce our audiences to a wide
range of diverse topics and histories. Each year we carefully look at available characters
and strive for racial/ethnic diversity and gender balance. We are also careful to select
performers who will represent the entire perspective of a historical figure, not just their
praiseworthy qualities. We have gained a national reputation for being a first-class venue
and program among our performers and other Chautauqua venues in the United States. In
fact, we are the only venue on the West Coast offering this type of program on a sustained
basis. As a result, we have been able to bring in many of the most talented Chautauquans
from around the United States to enhance the cultural offerings available to Pleasanton’s
residents, workers, and visitors in the downtown district.
Describe your agency and provide its mission or purpose statement.
The mission of the Amador Livermore Valley Historical Society's Museum on Main is,
“Enriching Community Life Through Education and Preservation.” The Museum on Main
tells the fascinating stories of those who came before -- illustrating characters, places, and
events that have shaped our community. These tales capture the hearts of people in our
community, enabling them to connect with our rich heritage and consider how they are
shaping tomorrow's history today.
Founded in 1963, the Amador Livermore Valley Historical Society (ALVHS) currently carries
out its mission through the following: permanent and temporary exhibits in the Museum on
Main; guest lecturers; Chautauqua performances; special tours for school groups, scout
troops, and other youth and adult organizations; community organization partnerships; e-
newsletters; outreach efforts to newcomers seeking links to this community; programs to
encourage lifelong learning and interest in local history for all residents and visitors; special
fundraising events; interviews with significant individuals for the oral history collection;
acquisition, archiving and care of historic artifacts, documents and photographs that
enhance the role of the Museum on Main as a vital cultural and community resource.
Please describe how you plan to market this project.
This year we plan to continue our current marketing efforts while focusing on better utilizing
social media. We will continue to send press releases to local media outlets to cover the
series and individual performances. We expect to continue to get good press coverage
from the Pleasanton Weekly, Livermore Independent, Pleasanton Patch, and Your Town
Monthly. We will also continue to share the series with our membership and contacts
through our e-newsletter, which goes out to over 900 people every month.
For the 2023 series, we reached out to every history, theater, and literature high school
Page 37 of 116
