world performance experience, while broadening community interest and appreciation for
jazz music.
Since February 2016, 38 students were selected at auditions to participate in the big band.
There are no other similar jazz programs at the high school level within a 30-mile radius.
Auditions for 2024-2025 East Bay Jazz All-Stars will be completed this month (January) and
weekly rehearsals will begin under the direction of Band Director Spencer Sussman.
LVA will handle project operations and administration; providing marketing and fund
development support, project follow-up and grant funding reports with City of Pleasanton.
In its upcoming season, East Bay Jazz provides students with more performance
opportunities throughout the school year and summer. Due to their successful festival
performances at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, the EBJ High School All-Stars have
been invited back. Both ensembles have also received inquiries for future performances at
the Bankhead Theater, the Bothwell Arts Center, and various EAST BAY JAZZ public
functions in the Tri-Valley Area.
Identify the organization(s) that your agency will partner with on this project. (A
Collaboration Agency Form is required for each collaborating agency.) Enter N/A if not
applicable.
N/A
Please choose a common indicator that your agency will use to measure participation.
Audience (performance)
Spectators (event)
Participants
Clients
Estimate the total number of unduplicated Pleasanton residents to be served by this
project.
The ultimate goal of the Community Concert is to reach about 200 Pleasanton residents at
a cost of $6,615 total. This grant would enable LVPAC to provide mentorship, skill
development, and a unique performance opportunity for the East Bay Jazz musicians. This
program would not continue further if funding were not made available to fulfill this project.
Describe the specific population your agency anticipates serving with these funds and
how they will benefit from the implementation of this project. (e.g. low income, youth,
disabled, etc.)
Diverse high school students in the East Bay Jazz Band will benefit from receiving real-
world performance experience and mentorship from professional musicians.
Through the East Bay Jazz Band, high school students will emerge with the following skills
and benefits:
- Enhanced knowledge of musicianship.
- Enhanced music ability and performance experience.
- Increased skill in improvisation and sight-reading of music.
