The data can be labeled and securely shared with
supervisors, investigators, and prosecutors while leaving an audit trail of who views each
video.
In 2020, the City renewed its agreement with Axon and upgraded to the Taser 7 and the Axon
Body 3 cameras. The City’s current agreement with Axon expires on November 30, 2025.
DISCUSSION
Axon provides Tasers, a BWC system, evidence retention software, training, and supporting
software in a package that includes support, replacement, and maintenance for five years. The
most current hardware models offered by Axon and included in the proposed agreement
include the Taser 10 and the Axon Body 4 camera, which feature enhanced features while
retaining desired functionality from previous models.
Taser 10
The City currently uses the Axon Taser 7 as its CED. Tasers are loaded with single-use
cartridges which, when deployed, launch two probes simultaneously. The updated Taser 10
included in the proposed agreement features a redesigned cartridge that fires one probe at a
time and carries a total of ten probes. This gives the officer the ability to fire the probes more
precisely and provides eight additional opportunities to secure a connection before needing to
replace the Taser cartridge. This improves the likelihood of a successful CED deployment. The
renewed Axon contract includes updated training resources and an allotment of training
cartridges. Officers will need to be trained in the new features of the Taser 10. Pleasanton
Police Department Policy Manual Section 309 addresses the use of CEDs/ Tasers
Attachment 1).
Taser Use Statistics
The City tracks the deployment of CEDs (Tasers). The Body 4 BWC is the newest model with
improved real-time communication capabilities, a wider field of view, better image quality, and
extended battery life. Features currently used include automatic uploading and “tagging” of
BWC footage, automatic activation of BWCs when Tasers are activated, firearms are drawn
from officers’ holsters, or the BWCs believe they hear a gunshot.
