Either the user
or the member of the department who was captured on the BWC recording may submit a written
request to his or her Supervisor for the video to be deleted. The request shall contain specific
reasonsfor recommending the deletion of the recording. The Supervisor shall “flag” the video tobe
deleted and alert the Division Commander of the request. If it is determined that there is private content on
the accidental or unintentionally recorded video that does not otherwise contain relevant evidence
or information related to a criminal or administrative investigation, the Division Commander shall
endure that the video is not viewed by other members and is deleted as soon as possible. The
Division Commander shall ensure that the request and approval documentation is uploaded into
the online cloud database in place of the recording.
Accidental Signal Activations (e.g., administrative un-holstering without deactivating the Signal
Sidearm) should be memorialized verbally in the member’s BWC and associated footage shall
be titled as an accidental Activation. Members may seek deletion of that footage following the
above procedures.
450.12 RETENTION POLICY
BWC recordings shall be categorized properly to ensure they are retained for an appropriate
amount of time, as indicated in the table below. Occasionally, the proper category for a recording
may change as an investigation develops. It shall be the responsibility of the employee assigned
to investigate an incident to ensure all BWC recordings are properly categorized and contain all
required information (Incident or Case Number, Title, and Retention Category).
BWC files which become part of a citizen complaint or administrative investigation will follow the
retention period identified for the complaint/investigation. Some BWC files that do not fall into the
above categories may be retained longer than twenty-four (24) months for training purposes. The
Division Commander will determine the retention length of these training videos based on their
usefulness.
Copyright Lexipol, LLC 2025/06/10, All Rights Reserved.
Published with permission by Pleasanton Police Department
Body Worn Camera Systems - 423
Attachment 2
Docusign Envelope ID: B1798F31-93DB-4AB1-AC82-92BCF01B645C
