SHC Tri-Valley East Wing Hospital Addition
Design Review Application – Project Narrative
TAYLOR DESIGN – 6370.101

15

LANDSCAPING
The landscape site design enhances campus beauty, fosters patient and staff comfort and security, and is
focused on low maintenance, low water use and sustainability. Integrated with the surrounding campus, it
ensures seamless circulation and easy navigation for patients and staff. The staff & patient spaces create a
welcoming atmosphere that is supportive of the campus community.
The design integrates the staff & patient spaces and circulation within a biophilic landscape. It provides
connections to adjacent parking, bike parking and pedestrian corridors, and as well to a variety of amenity
spaces. At the drop-off area are benches along the path of travel as well as social, collaborative, waiting and
respite areas near to the Emergency Department waiting room & entry. There is also a staff lounge patio at the
back side of the Emergency Department adjacent to the staff lounge. These areas feature furnishings selected
for comfort, ease of use and group as well as individual seating. This allows staff & patients to select, based on
their needs, from a variety of outdoor amenity spaces at different scales and degree of privacy.
The materials used in the landscape are durable, low maintenance and contemporary materials. The forms are
organic and curvilinear forms which help to soften the feel of the landscape and create an attractive contrast to
the orthogonal design of the architecture and existing campus.
The planting for the site will be drought tolerant, low water use native and climate adapted species. Plants will
be selected both to create a contemporary landscape design that is both unique to the ED expansion and
cohesive with the existing landscape design. The low water use plantings will contribute to overall irrigation
water use reductions. Shade trees will be located strategically throughout the site to mitigate heat, enhance
beauty and achieve the required shade calculations for hardscape, landscape and parking areas. Evergreen
shrubs along building facades provide a buffer between room windows, circulation and programmed courtyard
areas.
The irrigation for the site will be designed to support thriving plantings by strategically and efficiently providing
the least amount of water required. The system will feature a weather-based irrigation controller with
automatic rain shutoff. The plants will be irrigated with high efficiency drip irrigation and trees with deep root
water tubes with bubblers. This design will meet or exceed Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance
(MWELO) and local water agency requirements.
