330 Land Company, LLC Arroyo Lago
9785.004.001 Design-Level Geotechnical Report

Page | 25 April 16, 2024
Latest Revision October 31, 2025
8.0 PAVEMENT DESIGN

8.1 FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

Based on our experience with similar variable soil materials in the vicinity of the site, it is our
opinion that a preliminary R-value of 5 is recommended for design. Using estimated traffic indexes
for various pavement loading requirements, we developed the following minimum recommended
pavement sections using Chapter 630 of the Caltrans Highway Design Manual (including the
asphalt factor of safety), presented in the table below.

TABLE 8.1-1: Minimum Asphalt Concrete Pavement Sections
TRAFFIC INDEX ASPHALT CONCRETE
(inches)
CLASS 2 AGGREGATE BASE
(inches)
5 3 10
6 3½ 13
7 4 16
8 5 18
9 5½ 21
Note: Class 2 Aggregate Base material with a minimum R-value of 78.

These sections are for estimating purposes only and may not include required city minimums. If
desired, reduced sections may be possible based on R-value tests performed on samples of
actual subgrade materials recovered at the time of grading. Pavement con struction and all
materials should comply with the requirements of the Standard Specifications of the State of
California Department of Transportation, civil engineer, and appropriate public agency.

8.2 RIGID PAVEMENT

Concrete pavement sections can be used to resist heavy loads and turning forces in areas such
as fire lanes or trash enclosures. Final design of rigid pavement sections, and accompanying
reinforcement, should be performed based on estimated traffic loads and frequencies. We
recommend the following minimum design sections for rigid pavements.

• A minimum section of 6 inches of Portland Cement concrete should be used over 6 inches of
Caltrans Class 2 Aggregate Base (AB).
• Concrete pavement should have a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 3,000 psi.
• Control joint spacing should be in accordance with Portland Cement Association guidelines.

8.3 PAVEMENT SUBGRADE PREPARATION

Finished subgrade and aggregate base should be compacted in accordance with Section 5.6.
Aggregate base should meet the requirements for ¾-inch maximum Class 2 AB in accordance
with Section 26-1.02B of the latest Caltrans Standard Specifications.

Subgrade soil and aggregate base materials should be in a stable, non-pumping condition at the
time aggregate baserock materials and pavement are to be placed and compacted. Proof -rolling
with a heavy wheel-loaded piece of construction equipment should be implemented. Yielding
materials should be appropriately mitigated, with suitable mitigation measures developed in
coordination with the client, contractor, and geotechnical engineer.
