37

Protected Intersections
Often considered as a bicycle crossing treatment since they are used to mitigate conflicts
with vehicles when a bikeway crosses an intersection, protected intersections also serve
as pedestrian crossing treatments. A protected intersection includes a physical barrier
between bicycles and motor vehicles within the intersection, provides designated spaces
for all users (drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians), reduces conflict points, increases sight
lines, reduces turning speeds and improves comfort for vulnerable users. A fully protected
intersection has protected bicycle crossings for all movements within the intersection.

Guidance
• Protected intersections include eight key elements as shown in the graphic above.
They are compatible with both one-way and two-way separated bikeways.
• Bikeways and sidewalks crossing a protected intersection should each have their
own designated pavement markings.
• Protected intersections may be appropriate at signalized and stop-controlled
intersections.
