Bike to Wherever Day is a major event in Pleasanton, with the city sponsoring and coordinating energizer stations providing
refreshments, encouragement, and bicycle information.
The City’s Commendable Commutes program is a public/private partnership aimed at reducing drive-alone trips and promoting
transit, walking and bicycling trips during peak commute hours. Services include on-site transportation information visits, free transit
trips through the Try Transit Program, marketing materials, networking opportunities, local and regional transportation updates, and
the guaranteed ride home program.
Program Opportunities
• EN-1: Promote Regional Commuter Challenges. Partner with
regional agencies to promote and incentivize participation in
events like the Bay Area Bike Challenge among local residents
and workforce centers.
• EN-2: Downtown “Bike to Shop” & Bicycle-Friendly Business Program. Establish a “Bike to Shop” program in partnership
with the Downtown Pleasanton Association and local mer-
chants to offer special discounts, rewards, or incentives to
patrons who arrive at their shops by bicycle. To encourage
long-term participation and elevate local commerce, partici-
pating merchants who provide dedicated bike parking or offer
consistent commuter incentives can earn an official “Bicy-
cle-Friendly Business” designation, which the City can publicly
recognize and promote through municipal marketing channels
and local business directories.
• EN-3: Expand Commendable Commutes Program. Expand
participation in the City’s Commendable Commutes program
by encouraging local businesses, employers, property man-
agers, and developers to implement transportation demand
management (TDM) strategies that support walking, bicy-
cling, and transit use. Promote participation in the program
through outreach, recognition, and technical assistance.
• EN-4: Partner Group Rides & Repair Clinics. Coordinate with
Bike East Bay and local bicycle shops to cross-promote and
host regular group rides, repair clinics, safety workshops, and
specialized classes (e.g., “build-a-bicycle” youth programs
and cargo-carrying techniques).
