Footing embedment depth is measured from the lowest adjacent soil grade to the bottom of the footing.
2. The recommendations above are for a foundation designed for net dead plus live loads. These bearing
pressures may be increased by one-third for wind or seismic loads.
6.3 Lateral Load Design Criteria
Lateral loads may be resisted by soil friction and by the passive resistance of the
soils. For engineered fill or native soil, we recommend the following lateral load
design criteria:
Coefficient of Friction .............................. 0.35
. Passive Pressure .............................. 350 psf/ft
The passive pressure and the frictional resistance of the soils may be combined
without reduction in determining the total lateral resistance. These values are
ultimate and an appropriate factor of safety should be applied by the structural
engineer.
6.4 Retaining Walls
Cantilevered retaining walls (unrestrained), above water, without surcharge, may
be designed assuming the soils will impose a pressure equal to that developed by
a fluid with a density of:
. Horizontal/Flat Backfill ............................. 40 psf/ft
2H:1V ........................................ 60 psf/ft
Any surcharge from adjacent loadings should be added to this pressure using a
factor of 0.30. Our recommendations assume a fully drained condition, therefore,
we recommend that a drainage blanket system be provided. We also recommend
that the structural fill placed behind the retaining wall be granular, if possible. If
~Korbmacher Engineering, Inc.
