1-Ieidi Massie
Nancy's note....
Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for your message and for reaching out - I was not aware this was coming up in 2
weeks (MAY 16`b). Here are the concerns (in priority order) of residents I have talked to, much
beyond Valley. #1 thru #3 are deal breakers. I also attached material the Stop Pleasanton
Gridlock group sent to the Council and a recent news release.
I think the community will fight this issue even harder than other issues and you will see
previously divided areas uniting as most neighborhoods will be hurt. I'd guess
90%CON/10%PRO. The main supporters are: Vineyard area residents who want services, The
Chamber/associated people, small nearby businesses, and the Temple .
The sole issue is location. Wouldn't we be better off having HD reinvest in existing store they can
compete with Lowes and not jeoparidize the existing tax base?
1) Noise - 20 semis a day barreling down 12 miles of inner city streets (4 exits and 3
miles of roads/each ...Sunol/1st, Stoneridge, Valley, Santa Rita, Bernal, etc.)
• Almost all hours - 5 a.m.-11 p.m.. as store is open 6-10
• Especially during "quiet off peak hours" -shaking homes with loud diesel engines waking
residents/disturbing peace -rubberized pavement cannot help.
Even the Church is precluding deliveries when Church is in session -however,
when their parishioners have left, they do not care.
Home Depot does not own/can't truly control routes -Pleasanton can't even control
routes of company owned trucks today using Valley (where it is illegal , or nearly so). It
does not make business sense for a trucking company to use 580/EI Charro if coming
from South ,West or North. Cheaper for them to get a fine vs. lost revenue/productivity
(and that assumes we ever caught them which we can't do if they are not labeled Home
Depot).
2) Safety -walkers/cyclists/all ages- - 20 semis a day
• Semis do not have clean line of sight and danger is very high at intersections and
turns. Many of the streets used are on heavily traveled school paths.
I was seriously injured (4 weeks in hospital) riding a bike across a 4 lane road similar to Stoneridge or
Valley as a college student -the semi truck was turning right and did not see me due to a line of sight issue
(and i was an experienced cyclist in a sidewalk and with a green light). Another team member's son was
hit on a bicycle at Santa Rita and Valley when a truck was turning right and just did not see her son.
Unfortunately, this is the reality of semi's -poor line of sight ad we can't jeopardize safety of others.
3) Noise/Traffic -increased early morning/late p.m and weekend timeframe, especially in
same area where Water Park may go in. Home Depot draws much more cross town traffic
than a local neighborhood shopping center (serving nearby blocks does), especially during early
morning weekend hours - my rough count shows weekend traffic could be 25% to 50% worse on
Valley. The city has not done an off peak traffic/noise analysis which I think should be done if this
is ever presented again.
